YGYS Volunteer Guide

We all bring different skills and we all learn new skills. In our experience, here’s four skills that make a great volunteer:

  • Reliability: be on time and follow through on your commitments.

  • Positive attitude: maintain a positive attitude, support other volunteers and help out with tasks.

  • Flexibility: adapt to changing situations and take on new responsibilities.

  • Good communication skills: effectively communicate with other volunteers, event organizers, and guests.
Volunteering is a great way to build your skills. We provide a practical way for volunteers to develop important skills while making a meaningful difference in the lives of other young people. Gain experience of teamwork, leadership, communication, and problem-solving, while also learning about the impact you can make in your community.
Our volunteers get involved in all aspects of our Annual Gala in aid of BC Children’s Hospital. You’ll help with organizing the event, selling tickets, supporting guests on the day and announcing how much has been raised for BC Children’s Hospital.

Here are some tips for Grade 11 volunteers supporting at our Annual Gala.

    1. Be punctual: Arrive early to the event and be ready to start on time. This shows your dedication and helps ensure the event runs smoothly.
    2. Dress appropriately: Dress smart and if you’re not sure, ask one of our team.
    3. Be friendly: Smile and greet guests as they arrive, and be willing to help them with any questions they may have.
    4. Be attentive: Keep an eye out for guests who may need support, such as those who need help finding their seats or need help with any special needs.
    5. Be organized: Keep track of your tasks and responsibilities, and stay focused on what needs to be done to help the event runs smoothly.
    6. Be a team player: Work well with other volunteers, and be willing to help out when needed.
    7. Be respectful: Be respectful of guests, other volunteers and the event staff.
    8. Be discreet: Be aware of any sensitive information you may come across and keep it confidential.
    9. Be knowledgeable: Learn about YGYS and BC Children’s Hospital so that you can help answer any questions guests may have about it.
    10. Be grateful: Show your appreciation to the guests for their support and thank them for attending the event.

 

Remember to enjoy the experience. Since 2011, with the support of our volunteers and community, YGYS has raised nearly $275,000 for BC Children’s Hospital. As YGYS volunteers, you’re part of that story. Thank you for making a difference.
